Versatile wet-chemical synthesis of non-agglomerated CaCO3 vaterite nanoparticles.

Calcium carbonate (vaterite) nanoparticles of 20-60 nm size were obtained without stabilizing tensides by heating a dispersion of calcium bicarbonate (CaHCO(3)) in ethylene glycol for 30 minutes at 40 to 100 °C.

Vaterite crystals contain two interspersed crystal structures.

Calcite, aragonite, and vaterite are the three anhydrous polymorphs of calcium carbonate, in order of decreasing thermodynamic stability. Although vaterite is not commonly found in geological settings, it is an important precursor in several carbonate-forming systems and can be found in biological settings. Because of difficulties in obtaining large, pure, single crystals, the crystal structure...

Confinement stabilises single crystal vaterite rods.

Single-crystals of vaterite, the least-stable anhydrous polymorph of CaCO3, are rare in biogenic and synthetic systems. We here describe the synthesis of high aspect ratio single crystal vaterite rods under additive-free conditions by precipitating CaCO3 within the cylindrical pores of track-etch membranes.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Flakes—a New Form

LLE Review, Volume 74 139 The last 20 years have seen a growth of mixed-media systems in which cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC’s) are one component. These include polymer-dispersed CLC’s1 in which the CLC’s are confined to microdroplets within a continuous isotropic polymer and CLC’s in gels2 in which there is a small amount of polymer to stabilize the CLC structure. In either case, the contin...

Quantitative control of CaCO3 growth on quartz crystal microbalance sensors as a signal amplification method.

The surface crystallization of CaCO3 on gold was monitored by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Quantitative control of the grown crystals was realized by adjusting the ratio of two functional groups, -N(CH3)3 and -COOH, on SAMs. Crystals with uniform size, morphology and polymorphism were obtained. The amount of crystals formed was found to increase with an increase in the -COOH group. The ...
